What kind of a drink is "Tadi"? It is a milky natural white drink derived from palm trees. TADI is obtained from palm trees found in Powai and all over India. Tadi is drained from tender shoots of the tree, collected in earthen vessels atop tress. If drunk with lime compound it is known as NEERA. If taken raw it is said to be good for health. The fermented version of TADI is intoxicating.

You would have seen Palm trees growing all over Powai, they are part of the fast vanishing flora of this suburb. It may seem strange that even such a tree produces a product that is on the last chain of intoxicating drinks naturally derived in the simplest form. TADI is also tapped from coconut trees all over Konkan coast in Maharashtra.

Shankar learnt the skill of tapping Tadi in his native place of Tamilnadu from his childhood. He used to accompany his father on his collection trips. He learnt how to make the harness and finer elements of climbing the slender trees with tools tied on hip. When he grew up he took to the trade to earn a living for himself.

He came to Powai two years back and has become a crack Tadi tapper. He climbs on an average of thirty trees in a day in the morning and evening to collect 30 litres of Tadi. The freshly collected has sweet taste and if left overnight it ferments whose consumption intoxifies the person having it. It is this property that makes it popular amongst people for its demand as a cheap form of liquor.

Shankar narrated, “Once in my native place when I was on top of the tree, my harness broke and I fell down. I was out of work for six months with fracture and pain. This is very rare and now I check the rope harness every time I climb.”

We checked from the Tadi shops selling this drink to learn certain chemicals are blended in them to heighten the effect. But fresh Tadi is considered safe and rather a health drink in the countryside.
