China Dominates Olympics, Other Top Sport Events At A Big Cost

Over the years, the People's Republic of China has emerged a sports giant, and done very well at the prestigious Olympics & other top sport events. However, its growth and development in the field has come at a very big cost.

Reports suggest that the culture of sports and fitness has still not taken roots in the country even as majority of its population--more so the young adults and children--are not only unhealthy, they also suffer from various diseases. They are also not very sports/fitness-oriented as one would have expected from the people of a nation which is next only to the US at the Olympics--in terms of winning the overall number of medals.

Another cause of worry is the fact that China over spends to bag medals at the Olympics and other top sport events. As suggested by certain reports, it roughly spent a staggering $ 50 million at the Athens Olympics to pocket a medal. This is certainly a very big amount and robs the nation much of its sports glory.

Keeping these facts in mind I guess our achievements and performances at the Olympics and other leading events is not that bad as we would like to believe--more so if we consider the truth that the government and other involved organizations hardly spend much on our athletes and sportsmen in particular, and sports & athletics in general.

As I said before, I would better prefer to ignore this gentleman's observations. Period.

Look Mr Pandey I don't have time to look inside you. You better read your own comment before and than write a fresh.

Someone's observations do not not deserve reply from me so I would rather prefer not to reply. Anyways, this gentleman does not know what he is talking about. He is contradicting his own observations. Much strangely, he also claims to know certain things about me which even I do not know; for instance, that I am a failed man. Hitherto, I had no idea if I were not successful but a failed man. Thanks for your 'pearls of wisdom' and enlightening me!

You are not an optimist but a failed man supporting a lame country. Don't be blind Pandey ji, open up your eyes check your self where you stand in the Olympic medal list. Every body loves to dream regarding their bright future like mukesh or L N mittal.  You also  prefer to see the brighter side of the picture but darling there is great difference between dreaming and seeing.

I agree, if China was to take up kabaddi and "gulli danda", they would beat India hands down all the way to Beijing. India is not an athletic nation and Indians are not the athletic type. We are bookish people, we simply cannot compete. When was the last time you heard a mother say to a child, "go out and play". Rather you will hear, "get back to your books".

I am an optimist. I would rather prefer to see the brighter side of the picture. I also fail to buy the argument that if some more countries start playing cricket, in future, India will be automatically pushed to the bottom.

I accept your sentence that Rome was not built in a day But no body will accept if you mean to say Rome took more than 100 years to built. Ha.....Ha..... Listen Mr Pandey long long ago when there were few country playing hockey than India was Lion but when more joined in India is last. Same way today we are at the top of the world in slave game (cricket) but in future when more slave country will join in  we will be at the bottom. Isn't it Mr Pandey.

Clubbing a champion team like Sri Lanka--which has won the World Cup--with the likes of Nepal & Bangladesh defies all logic even while it also prematurely brings an end to a discussion which till now had invited some thoughtful comments. And before I forget: Nepal doesn't play cricket at the international level. Period.

Beating Sri Lanka, Bangladesh or Nepal is hardly overseas. With more than a billion people obsessed with cricket there is no hope for this nation in sports. Even cricket has lost its charm.

Team India's performances abroad may not be something to go to town with, but to say it never performs well overseas is hard to digest--given the fact that it has beaten almost all nations, including the likes of Australia &  South Africa, in their own backyards. As I said before, it recently beat Sril Lanka also--that too comprehensively. Mind you, beating the Sri Lankans in their own home nation, that too in style, is not easy.
