ANJANA PRAKASH
Hon’ble Justice Mrs. Anjana Prakash hails from Rohini (Santhal Parganas) Jharkhand. Her grandfather retired as Addl. Accountant General Bihar and was a Member of the Bihar Public Service Commission. She was born in Danapur but since her father, who retired as Collector Appeals, Central Excise and Customs, was in the central services, she did her schooling from Nasik (Maharashtra), Jamshedpur, Kanpur, Barielly and passed Senior Cambridge from Allahabad. She graduated from Patna Women’s College and was married to Mr. Ravi Prakash, an Engineer with Coal India, in 1977. They have two children, both of them well settled in life.
Her father-in-law, late Braj Kishore Prasad, Sr. Advocate & Chairman, Bihar State Bar Council decided she should study Law and consequently she joined the Bar on 2 February 1982. She worked as his junior for almost 10 years during which period she was trained in Criminal Law which was his area of specialization. Ever since then she has been engaged to appear in Patna High Court and other High Courts viz. Jharkhand High Court and Chhattisgarh High Court, as well as numerous District Courts of Bihar and Jharkhand. She regularly appeared before the Hon’ble Supreme Court of India. In addition, she had been appointed as Addl. Public Prosecutor to conduct the trials of Pararia Case at Deoghar Distt. Court and the Sitamarhi Riot Cases. In 2004, for the first time in the history of Patna High Court lady lawyers were designated as Senior Advocate, and she was one of the two who were so designated.
She was nominated as Member, Bihar Legal Services Authority by the Patna High Court and became Secretary, Patna High Court Council for Legal Aid & Advice. She has been actively involved in the Free Legal Aid, Juvenile Justice, Family Courts, Lok Adalats, Crimes against Women and Jail Administration movement through various NGOs such as Patna High Court Council for Legal Aid & Advice, PUNASHCH, UNICEF, and Bihar Human Rights Association. She is a Member, Editorial Board, Indian Law Reporter and Patna Law Journal.
Further, she was the sole member from the Eastern Region of India of a Study Group invited by the Government of the United States of America in 1999 to visit USA to study the Judicial Reforms & Administration, Juvenile Justice, Law relating to Women, Prison Administration, and Laws relating to Street Children. She is also a regular invitee by Doordarshan, AIR and various TV Channels for Panel Discussions.
