Over the years, the People's Republic of China has emerged a sports giant, and done very well at the prestigious Olympics & other top sport events. However, its growth and development in the field has come at a very big cost.
Reports suggest that the culture of sports and fitness has still not taken roots in the country even as majority of its population--more so the young adults and children--are not only unhealthy, they also suffer from various diseases. They are also not very sports/fitness-oriented as one would have expected from the people of a nation which is next only to the US at the Olympics--in terms of winning the overall number of medals.
Another cause of worry is the fact that China over spends to bag medals at the Olympics and other top sport events. As suggested by certain reports, it roughly spent a staggering $ 50 million at the Athens Olympics to pocket a medal. This is certainly a very big amount and robs the nation much of its sports glory.
Keeping these facts in mind I guess our achievements and performances at the Olympics and other leading events is not that bad as we would like to believe--more so if we consider the truth that the government and other involved organizations hardly spend much on our athletes and sportsmen in particular, and sports & athletics in general.

Comment by sanjay kumar pandey on August 13, 2012 at 10:56am India wins its sixth medal (Sushil Kumar, Silver, Wrestling) and doubles its tally at the Olympics. I hope this piece of information would drive the message home. One more thing: Rome was not built in a day.
Comment by Aman on August 13, 2012 at 10:23am This blog is nothing but big bakwas. Jab angoor nahi milta to jaroor khatta hi hota hai. Pandey ji we lost all the games in hockey.... Do you think this was due to china? Not a single gold in this Olympic still we are happy.Compare our medals with china......we r no where. Do not try to compare ourselves with china because we Indians are thousand of miles backward from china.
Comment by Ram Prakash on August 13, 2012 at 12:53am Kya pandey. Indian cricket team tho bahar mei kaha perform karta hai. india mei khelta hai tho dhara dhar run marta hai. videsh mei tai tai fish.
Comment by sanjay kumar pandey on August 12, 2012 at 11:41pm Team India's performances abroad may not be very good as compared to its performances on the home turf, but to say that the Team India is useless abroad is taking things too far. India has performed well overseas also. Only recently it tamed the Lankan Lions in their own backyard. In the context of Great Britain, I would like to point out that the Island Nation has been performing consistently well at the Olympics and various other top sport and athletic events all across the globe. Further, an individual or a team would do well if the same has it what it takes to do better than others. Friendly surroundings and home supporters would motivate to a certain extent only. A nation like the UK, and/or an athlete like Bolt would dazzle no matter where they could be performing. No wonder, they are 'proven' champions.
Comment by Shalu Sharma on August 12, 2012 at 9:29pm There is evidence to prove that an athletes performance is improved from the response it gets from the crowd. Why is it that the Indian cricket team performs well at home and is useless abroad?
Comment by sanjay kumar pandey on August 12, 2012 at 9:10pm Home advantage works only to a certain level. If an athlete is not best on a given day, he won't win, no matter what.
Comment by Ragini Bhatiya on August 12, 2012 at 4:14pm I find these games a waste of money. I don't watch them.
Comment by Shalu Sharma on August 12, 2012 at 3:32pm Britain managed to get the medals as they have home advantage. As for India, we are not a sporting nation and we don't need to.
Comment by sanjay kumar pandey on August 12, 2012 at 10:12am I fully subscribe to your views now, Mr Lal! You are 100% right when you say that we must walk in the footsteps of the US & the UK, instead of China where there isn't even a hint of freedom & democracy
Sanjay sir ji. Free world ( USA and Great Britain) have 90 and 59 medals between them. The autocratic world of China has only 83 medals. Why don't we Indians, belonging to free world, learn from USA and GB and produce medal winning athletes ? Let us ignore China. Let us make USA and GB our role model for producing Olympic medal winners.
