The history of Munghyr is, in fact, a chronology of battles. It begins with the Mahabharata that records the encounter of Bhim with the ruler of Modagiri (Munghyr's ancient name as mentioned in the Mahabharata) and concludes with the defeat of Nawab Mir Qasim in 1763 at the hands of the East India Company. In between, the pages of history of Monghyr are riddled with rebellions, sieges and battles fought between Palas, Pratiharas, Turks, Mughals, Afghans, Marathas and the English.

Comment by Dr. Ajay Kumar on October 20, 2011 at 6:49pm: Have spent 5 years in Monghyr (that is how we wrote in 1950s). Passed matriculation from Zilla School and I.Sc. from R.D, & D.J. College, where my unclewas Prof. & Head, Hindi Dept. We lived in one of the four quaters inside college. One of my class friend from school days, Rajeshwer lives in Muzaffar Pur. On my trip back to India, we always meet and reminiscence good old days.My favourite place was the Ghat (forget the name) on Ganges inside Qilla. Lots of fond memories of the place. Last time I visited Monghyr was in late 1960s when I was a medical student in Darbhanga, possibly 1965 or 66.
