I have posted in the past on youbihar about searching for my ancestor village in Bihar.  Anyway, if you can help, do so and it would be very much appreciated.

I am a Mauritian. My ancestor came from Bihar, India in June 1858 to Mauritius to work as labourer. He was my great great grandfather. I have always wanted to know from which village/place he was from and even, visit the village, Godwilling, one day.

In September 2009, I have been able to trace my ancestor who came to Mauritius. According to records available at the Archives Department of the Indian Immigration Museum in Mauritius as recorded in June 1858, he was from:

My great great grandfather, DULULL, son of Lollsah, was from

Village: Nurunjempore

Zillah: Arrah

Pergunnah: Bhojepore

(State of Bihar, India)

Today, I was made to understand that Nurunjempore is written as Niranjanpur and that makes sense.  I learned also that the sub-district of Bhojepore of 1858 is divided into four districts namely: Bhojpur, Rohtas, Buxar and Kaimur.  What makes matter difficult for me to locate my ancestral village is that there are five "Niranjanpur"'s in the three districts ( Rohtas, Buxar and Kaimur).  Which one is my ancestor from?  I do not know and nobody have been able to help me so far.

About two weeks ago, I looking at the Roll of Electors of the Bihar Election Commission on the internet, something caught my attention.   In most wards of Panchayat Nokha and in many wards of Panchayat Nasrigang of Rohtas (What is a panchayat, I do not know?), there are more than 1000 electors/voters with surname/family name "Sah".  According to record in Mauritius(as recorded in 1858) the name of the father of my ancestor Dulull was Lollsah.  I presumed the names could in fact be Loll Sah or Lall Sah, but recorded as one name in 1858 in Mauritius as Lollsah.  There is one Niranjanpur in Block Karakat of Rohtas District and the town of Karakat is close to Town of Nokha (I have seen it on a map).

My question is (a) The people with family name/surname "Sah", do they belong to specific group/community, doing specific job, specific caste, living in majority in specific area. (b) is the village of Niranjanpur in the Block Karakat of Rohtas District found in the Panchayat Nokha or Panchayat Nasrigang of Rohtas District?  I do hope to hear from youbihar members, especially those from Rohtas and also from those whohave "Sah" as family name.  Thank you all.  I can also be contacted on my email address:

Hossen the surname Shah - sah refers to the baniya community of Bihar and the sub caste is Teli.
Anyone takers. Will investigate further.
Thank you very much Shalu Sharma and Anil Kumar Giri for your prompt reply.  Anil, if possible only, could you, please, give me some details about the Baniya Community/Teli Caste?  Anything specific to them?  Thank you.

You may wish to join hands with.

Can someone enlighten me on the following:

---   What is a Panchayat?  From my understanding, it is a group of villages.  Am I right?

---  Does a Panchayat have a Leader/Chief?  If yes, he/she elected by who? Directly by the voters or by some group?  Does a Panchayat have a Headquarter, administration, employees?  Does a Panchayat hold regular meetings?

-----What are the main functions/duties/responsabilities of a Panchayat?

-----Is a Panchayat a legal entity, which can enter into a contract?
