Mauritians will be able to track Bihar roots more easily

People of Indian origin living in Mauritius, most of whom hail from Bihar, will find it easier to trace their roots as the state government is going to open a single window system for them. Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar said a single window system would be opened through which Mauritians of Bihari origin could find out their ancestral roots in Bihar.

Mauritius government has initiated a move called “Trace your roots” to help people of Bihari origin, who are eager to trace their cultural roots and ancestral villages in Bihar, said Goorooduth Chuttoo, president of Bihar Roots Foundation, a special cultural cell set up in Mauritius to strengthen the ties between the people and their origins.

Trace your roots: It is a programme designed by the Ministry of Overseas Indian Affairs, hereinafter called ‘Ministry’; to assist Persons of Indians origin in tracing their roots.

Persons of Indians origin desirous of tracing their roots in India would be required to fill up the prescribed application form and deposit it with the concerned Indian Mission/Post located in the country of their residence along with a fee of Rs 20,000/- (Rupees twenty thousand) in equivalent US dollar, Euro or any other foreign currency acceptable to the Indian Mission/Post. Any other useful information/document that could be helpful in tracing the roots may also be submitted with the application. READ MORE.

I will gather as much information I can next time I go back to Mauritius then fill in the application. I have been told by my mum side of relatives that my great-great nana's relatives still live in Bihar which sounds quite interesting.

I think in the next few months or at least in the near future; the whole root tracing thing should take off pretty well. Not only will this be good for Bihar but it will be good for the people of Bihari origin outside India. It is perfectly possible that your relatives are still in Bihar and its worth considering visiting Bihar.
