Lets admit it - We as a nation generally lack "traffic sense". For some strange reason, we just can't understand the concept of "Queues" or lack the patience level to wait. Most people seem to be in some sort of "unknown" hurry. There also seems to be a serious lack of respect for pedestrians. Widespread corruption has also ensures almost anybody can get a "driving license".Signal violations are considered non serious. The number of road rage accidents make me ashamed. I could go on for a long time here....
Also, thousands of vehicles are added to our streets every month with no prior planning on what effects they would have on the day to day commute for public. The traffic waits are getting longer - so is the pollution and its effects on the health and safety of common people...
What are your thoughts on getting Bihar back on track in terms of proper traffic sense ? Reducing road accidents, making it friendly for pedestrians and cyclists.. encouraging more eco friendly atmosphere ?

Permalink Reply by Shalu Sharma on November 26, 2011 at 1:58pm As prosperity increases so does the number of vehicles on the road leading to traffic issues. This is a double edged sword.
Permalink Reply by Sumit Ranjan on November 26, 2011 at 4:27pm The root cause of all this is "lack of planning". When roads are built in America or Britain, they plan and try to foresee the scenario for the next 30-50 years. Unfortunately, this rarely happens in our country. One cannot blame the automobile manufacturers or the public for buying more vehicles - atleast not wholly. This is the job of the government to provide infrastructure that can sustain an increase in growth.
Also - I would appreciate suggestions to tackle these problems..
Permalink Reply by Shalu Sharma on November 26, 2011 at 4:48pm You cannot attempt to thrush the so called "western concepts" upon us. I understand that Indians abroad learn lots of things when they leave but they should just leave it at that. Lets not try to import everything from outside. The English language was thrust upon us by the imperialists and we did not choose to adopt it.
Permalink Reply by Sumit Ranjan on November 26, 2011 at 6:09pm But, whats the problem in learning something good from somewhere ? I don't care who invented "Electricity" or "Bulb" but as long as I find it useful, I won't mind using it....If we can accept this argument, then.. whats the harm in adopting "queues" and being a little more considerate towards fellow riders ?

Permalink Reply by Sumit Ranjan on November 27, 2011 at 3:44pm Yep.That was the whole point I was making. Regardless of whether something is "western" or "eastern" concept, I don't see any harm in us adopting it if it makes our lives better...

Sumit Ji, violating traffic rules in our state is attributable to lack of rule in place of instant punishment. Hardly anybody is penalised for violating traffic rules. I'm sure if a fine of just Rs. 100/- is slapped immediately on the person disregarding traffic rules, that person will remember the lesson for a long time. I think, this is a practical and implementable rule to discipline the traffic. Blaming increase in no. of vehicles on the road is never an argument to be appreciated.
Govt. should plan for construction of roads considering the increasing population and expected increase in vehicle in future. So, it's the failure of Govt to forsee the requirement of road and signal infrastructures which is the root cause of heavy traffic jam.
Further, the clutter of vendors alongside roads also cause slowing of traffic.
Dear Sumit Ji, I am very saddened to see the crowd of unauthorised vendors on Patna roads which is even more pronounced near Patna junction. I have previously commented upon beautification of Patna and the immediate steps required to address the traffic jam. You know, I wish to write to the appropriate authority at Patna who can do something about it. But I don't know to whom to write about this. Please let me know if there is any medium to convey this message to the right person.

I have also written to the honourable CM of Bihar on the issue of traffic. An officer of the rank of Dy Secretary has appreciated my concern/ suggestion and has assured me to take up the issue highlighted by me on priority basis. We will see what Govt does with regard to reducing traffic jam and smoothening traffic specially at patna.
I therefore call upon everybody to send such suggestion to the CM directly.
