Have you been asked this question, “Do you speak Bihari”. The answer to the questions is always No or big NO, I DONT SPEAK BIHARI. I find myself telling them that I speak Hindi and not Bihari at home. Yes we do encounter other languages from Bihar but it does not mean I know how to speak it.
Most of the people speak Hindi with varying dialects. As far as I am aware there are Hindi dialects spoken in Bihar such as Bhojpuri, Maithili, Magahi, Angika and so on but they are not called "Bihari". I have always maintained that there is no such language as Bihari.
Do you get this questions? Do you speak Bihari?

People from outside Bihar thinks andknow Bhojpuri and similar languuage (Apbhransh of Hindi) as Bihari language. accepting yes is not bad. I can say and I use to say yes I know Bihari and I am proud of it as I can speak my mother lounge.

Permalink Reply by Rajan Tiwari on March 21, 2012 at 4:47pm There is no such thing as Bihari language. All of them are Hindi dialects. So Hindi and its variations are spoken. There is nothing shameful of using these languages. Yes often we do not speak them in public. Lets not speak of Bhojpuri songs. Many of them are vulgar but some are very good. Its a mixed bag.
Permalink Reply by Mukund Kumar on March 21, 2012 at 4:50pm I am really surprised to see such discussions. In my view, language is nothing but a medium to communicate and that's all. I agree that is lot of difference are seen among the people only because which language we speak. But it is just silly. Forget the political propaganda of Thackrery's, they are nonsense and that is why they do so. By doing that they bring difference among different regions.By such acts Thackrey's are attacking national unity/integration of the union of India. If you happen to visit southern state of India, then you will feel that people just HATE Hindi speaking people. they will joke of you if you found speaking Hindi in Chennai.
Having said that, why should we once again be very particular of one language by this we are going to bring another difference among us (Biharis). Then we shall be making difference by language Bhojpuri speaking people, Vajjika speaking people, Maithili speaking people, Magahi Speaking people so on and so forth.
If other province people are sticking to their language ........good..... very good, if they differentiate other language people ... bad and if they hate or make violence on the basis of language ......very bad.
Let our language be even Hindi and we must be proud saying that we speak Hindi. Other regional languages can be in practice, they way it is. The regional language can be further promoted, that too is very good, but to patronize a language, doesn't look great.
I am proud of being an Indian and being a Bihari Indian. I treat all the region, language, religion, caste and creed belonging to India in one way. I do feel pain, when people of Bihar is ill-treated, our people make joke of Hindi speaking people. I do feel pain when my region, religion, caste/creed is politically or socially attacked. but what to do, no other go, that is how my country, region, society is and we got to find a way to live into.
We can reduce this gap by thinking neutral. Because people speak Marathi, Gujrati, Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam etc. we should also must have Bihari language is not a fair thiking in my view. Rest remains on people at large of Bihar.
I am a Bihari. I belong to Muzaffarpur. I know Vajjika, Bhojpuri, Maithili, Magahi very well, i can read, write and speak these languages. I know somehow ( can understand and try to speak somehow) Bengali, Gujrati, Punjabi, Tamil, Telugu.
I know Hindi & English as well. Among foreign languages, I am proficient in Kiswahili, Nepali and somehow can manage to understand/speak Twi and Luganda.
I do my official communications and day by day activity in Hindi.
BUT MY THOUGHT PROCESS ALWAYS HAPPENS IN VAJJIKA, at home also I do speak Vajjika only. What I was trying to make the point that, our own mother tongue will be part of our soul ofcourse, so no issues to make a competition with regard to the language.
I can speak Maithili, Bajjika, Angika and Bhojpuri to some extent. First three are similar to my language.
