 TOURISM INDUSTRY IN INDIA

WASIM AHMAD,Phd in tourism managemnt,

There are various definitions of tourism. Theobald (1994) suggested that etymologically, the word "tour" is derived from the Latin 'tornare' and the Greek 'tornos,' meaning 'a lathe or circle; the movement around a central point or axis.' This meaning changed in modern English to represent 'one's turn.' The suffix -ism is defined as 'an action or process; typical behavior or quality' whereas the suffix -ist denotes one that performs a given action. When the word tour and the suffixes -ism and -ist are combined, they suggest the action of movement around a circle. One can argue that a circle represents a starting point, which ultimately returns back to its beginning. Therefore, like a circle, a tour represents a journey that is a round trip, i.e., the act of leaving and then returning to the original starting point, and therefore, one who takes such a journey can be called a tourist. [en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tourism]

The Macmillan Dictionary defines tourism as the business of providing services for people who are travelling for their holiday. Wikipedia defines it as travel for recreational, leisure or business purposes. The OECD glossary of statistical terms defined tourism as the activities of persons travelling to and staying in places outside their usual environment for not more than one consecutive year for leisure, business and other purposes not related to the exercise of an activity remunerated from within the place visited. [stats.oecd.org/glossary/detail.asp?ID=2725]

Over the decades, tourism has experienced continued growth and deepening ‎diversification to become one of the fastest growing economic sectors in the world. Tourism has become a thriving global industry with the power to shape developing countries in both positive and negative ways. No doubt it has become the fourth largest industry in the global economy.

Similarly, in developing countries like India tourism has become one of the major sectors of the economy, contributing to a large proportion of the National Income and generating huge employment opportunities.  It has become the fastest growing service industry in the country with great potentials for its further expansion and diversification. However, there are pros and cons involved with the development of tourism industry in the country. Let us discuss the development as well as the negative and positive impacts of tourism industry in India.

bihar is a treasure trove for industry. if rajasthan can turn itself into such a soughtafter tourist destination by offering its deserts & half demolished forts, think what bihar can do with its buddhist heritage? what we lack are interest, sicerity, & commitment to take bihar forward. we just brag of what we don't have but never give a thought on what we have.

sumanta sinha,

kolkata.

Bihar without an international airport in Patna, Bihar will not be serious for tourism. The government of Bihar is not really serious for developing Bihar but to save its vote bank.

Helo Mr. Harish,

Thanks for writing to me & for your understanding. I am not in India presently. You can contact me via facebook in the name of Bikesh Saha. Hope to hear you soon.

I am glad to visit this social networking of Bihar. My native place is Isuapur, Chapra. Lets make use of its full advantage, meet people in an around, share the things which let our homeground to understand how bad Bihar is lagging behind as compare to other state.

I could see comments above from every corners pointing out politicians, gov, infrastructures n all. Very true we should be but from my point of view I think they are the secondary elements. The first n foremost faulters are the common people of Bihar n not only it is case of Bihar although everywhere in India. India is full of corruption, bureaucracy, terrorism n so on..........What brings all these things the answer is 'selfish' I cannot talk about the leadership, revolutionaries who let India brings into Independence from Britishers. The people should think, yes the common people the people of India, the people of all states. If we think that yes 'We Can Change" then for sure no one can stop anyone to change the system, 'I' 'ME' 'SELF' have many power & when the people understands the power of it then no one yes no one let it to not happen. After all we the people of India have the right to own as per Indian constituency is concern. I don't know when the common people of Bihar can understand the importance of his/her OWN. First of all they have to change of their own. Be open to RISE RISE n just RISE.

I am giving one example of movie called 'FALTU'. In the movie they have shown the low percentile student donot get admission anywhere so they search one colg called FALTU in the net. But finally as n when they come to know that the colg is not approved; fake then they decided to run the colg by their own. So just think what is not possible. IMPOSSIBLE have a meaning of itself - IM POSSIBLE.

So last but not the least I am switching off & leaving to the COMMON people of BIHAR with one quote - "TIME TO COME TO RISE" lets spread all over if we want to see BIHAR a prosperous, develop & valued state.

Hi one and all.

we have a great state and great heritage.
lets do our own private effort in informing people about the tourism of the state. Let us stop complaining and try to visit the sites of historical importance ourselves.  if we can take time from our busy schedule and visit one beautiful location. click some photographs upload here. i think it has to be started by us slowly and surely. bihar will have good tourism industry.

its good to know some like minded people have come forward to discuss such an important issue regarding upliftment of bihar. i'm myself a bengali born & brought up in bihar. though i'm settled down in calcutta now but have maintained & guarded my identity of hailing from bihar zealously with pride. it always hurts me when something bad happens in bihar. likewise, i take pride to mention & never miss an oppurtunity to boast bihar's present good govenance. i wish to see bihar develop in leaps in bounds. we can very well achieve it by promoting tourism. for this, some good agencies need to be hired to do this job at national & international level. three cheers for bihar...!

True Bihar has a lot of scope to attract tourists. I was there in December last year. I enjoyed going round the country, especially to the village of my forefathers, Bhaluana. However, there's is need for a good marketing strategy, which in my humble opinion is not there. Transport within and outside Patna is very bad. Drivers and operators just rip you off. There are too many cheats. The tourist transport service (from the Tourism Authority) ss not available (at least when I was there). An officer told me the service was no longer operating. No one was available for right advice. I was just told to seek the service of private operators. Most of these people siut in an empty office near well-known hotels to rip the helpless tourists. They are not giving either a good name to themselves or to the sector. While CM Nitish Babu is doing well, I think he will have to give a serious look at what is happening in the tourism sector. It's going from bad to worse. I am really disappointed.

I have been to most places in bihar and they are very good places to see. but the trouble is that facilities is not good anywhere. for example if you go to rajgir, there are 1 or two good hotels but many are poor, if japanese tourist are coming then they will have difficulty in staying. so infrastructure is required.

i can not agree with this view.  airport is not a must for tourism developement.  it is also one of the things among others. advertising is required.  even domestic travelors who arrive by trains are enough to boost up bihar tourism.  no need to look for foreigners.  many pilgrims arrive in gaya airport from thailand, sri lanka etc...

How can tourism flourish in Bihar when there is no international airport. Patna airport is unfit for the operation of big aircraft such as Airbus 320 and Boeing 737. Forget tourism in bihar.
