Read this survey and then think....think hard, very hard. Do we deserve to call ourselves civilised ? Can we hold our head with any pride ? Can we call ourselves proud Indian ?

As for me, I feel ashamed and I am unable to hold my head high as an Indian.

A global poll of experts has shown that Canada is the best and safest place for women to live. The country promotes genderequality, safeguards against violence and exploitation, access to healthcare. Infanticide, child mairrage and slavery makes India the worst country to live for women.

This poll was conducted in G20 countries - the world's biggest economy.

Germany, Britain, Australia and France were in top five countries amongst the G20 in a poll of 370 gender specialissts conducted by Trust Law a legal news service run by Thompson Reuters Foundation..

USA came sixth from the top best.  Saudi Arabia where women are very well educated but are banned from driving and only won right to vote in poll in 2011, came second worst after India, followed by Indonesia, South Africa and Mexico.

India is incredibly poor. Saudi Arabiais very rich. But there is commonality. If one has access to privilege, then one has a very diferent future. In India - read Bihar - women and girls continues to be sold as chattel (personal possession), married off as young as 10 years old, burned alive as a result of dowry related dispute. Young girls are exploited and abused as domestic slave labour, sex objects. They even suffer an early death in their mother's womb when an illegal Ultrasound reveals their gender followed by a trip to a doctor specialising in abortion.

And all this despite groundbreaking Domestic Violence Act 2005.

I hope female members of this site will take note and post comments. Of course male members are most welcome to put their side of opinion.

I think you are reading too many foreign reports. Nothing is happening in Bihar that you have read. There are many cases of racial attackts on Indians which are often unreported in Canada. Canada is a environmentally rough country where the templerature frequently drops to -40 degrees in many cities. Who wants to live in country like that.

Madam, what you say about Canada is their problem. It has nothing to do with us Indians in Indian sub-continent. Why are you so reluctant to put our disgraceful problem under the carpet ? Why are you shying away from reality and try to suggest what we should do to get rid of our "cultural" habit ? By not debating the real issue affecting us female in India, are you not sending signals that you approve of them ? Or are you in denial mode ?

Yes indians are bad people We dont know manner of living, behaving & surviving. We fight for caste creed and religion as well. youngsters are fancy of dowries like a wolf in a sheep's clothing.Girls are burnt alive for the dowry even girls dont know how to behave in others family. Most of the indian girls are uneducated only considered as useful materials for kitchen and pooja path activities. We are indians we all should discuss about our issues first we also should not try to let the ill issues under the carpet so that they could have been trouble for long long time.Yes i agree we have a nice country surrounding and enviroment but inspite of all indians mentality is as bad as garbage moreover we think like insects.Biharies has an edge on all issues

For a long..long time we Indians have been pushing our ugly deeds under the carpet and pretending everything is fine. But in today's globalised world with Internet, nothing is hidden to anyone, with the speed of light news travel to all parts of globe. (Our Information and Broadcasting Minister is a joke ! outside India )

But let us not waste our time in debating ills. Let us debate what we must do to eradicate this ill. We have 2005 law. How many of us are going to stand up and under the protection of this law try to bring about change.

Say and say freely. We need solution, not debating ills. We all know the ills. Let us find out means to help our unfortunate females and little girls. Let us change their lives.

My first suggestion is affirmative action. Abolish the nonsense of caste based reservation. Start female based reservation. For this, education....education...education is first priority. All education to females will be free up to university. All Ultrasound machine from doctor's clinic must be confiscated. only government approved clinic will have ultrasound.  Any doctor practicing female foeticide must be triad in law court, and if convicted, must be given at least 50 years prison sentence. For, he is committing murder.

I feel sad that such an important topic is not getting attention, especially from female members. Are there really real female members in youbihar ?

Rachna ji, I feel your concern, and I have full sympathy. We Indian people are very touchy, we don't like to hear about our faults. Yes, the article is true reflection of our society. You are lucky to be alive because you escaped Ultrasound. Thousands like you are not so lucky. Have you seen "Satya Mev Jayate" ? It depict our ugly face. I feel after talking to old people in Khagaul that we have become worse human being after independence.

I think most of the things are exaggeration you hear in the western media as they are full of hate and prejudice. The western world is in deep recession and they want their credit ratings to go up. They will naturally cook up such stories. It would be wise not to fall for it.

Another case of sweeping dirt and garbage under the carpet. No, our country can never look at its ugly side and take measures to correct them,

Respect and love for woman starts from our own homes. Indian men, the Law makers & enforcers are responsible for the plight of women in India.

I agree, recently Aamir Khan showed that domestic violence is so prevalent in India.
