hi
My maternal grand father Harnandan Panday was a key member of the team that excavated Nalanda under David B. Spooner who was superintendent of Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) for the Eastern Circle. My Grand father held the position of Assistant Superintendent Eastern Circle from 1916 until his death on November 25, 1919. All this can be found in the annual reports of the time of the Archaeological Survey of India. I found few things that was donated by Spooner himself to the Stanford University from where he has got his BA. In the material that is archived there i saw a hand written letter of my grand father to Spooner when he was acting as the Director General in the absence of John Hubert Marshall. Spooner was the only American to serve in the ASI.

its the most ancient university of india and was the best ever...
the books there were looted by the english. and i personally believe that our people were responsible for the present pathetic condition of the university....or else it would have been much better...

I would like to see some basis for the comments that Dr. Shekher makes. I can not believe that the group led by Lord Curzon, then the Viceroy of India that preserved Taj Mahal will destroy the books left at Nalanda, if any were left there at all. Dr. Spooner along with my grand father have done great work in Nalanda. I got this impression by reading the archived letters of Dr. Spooner. Dr. Spooner died in India and buried in Agra. The man wanted to return home but his leaves were getting cancelled due to the work load, and could not return to USA. These are great men in service of India's past and we need to honor them not discredit them based on hunch.
